Decorative Finishes Are Back!

I recently posted a video on Instagram applying a metallic coating from Boero, who is a supplier of decorative coatings from Italy. Probably not shocking but interestingly enough one comment from a follower insinuated that I should be stripped of my man card. That’s funny but unfortunately there are those who actually believe that. Why is the decorative coatings industry predominantly women? Why is the organization IDLA 90% women? My question to the individual who wrote that comment, or anyone who believes that is “do you like making money?”

Well I owned my own business painting residential homes for 18 years and one of my main goals was to make money. Unfortunately I had the opportunity to teach and apply the faux finishes of the old days by Ralph Lauren and it left a negative taste in my mouth. These finishes were hard to install, burnished easy, did not touch up well, and were over priced to name a few. Because of my experiences with Ralph Lauren coatings I decided to pass on any faux finish work that came my way. Little did I know I was passing on very profitable work. I was also turning down work that was satisfying to do.

Tips For Cut Ins For Painting

One of my passions is making things look new and beautiful again. I was recently introduced to Boero coatings which completely changed my perception of faux finishes. Watch my video applying metallic suede HERE. Ed Mattingly, of Boero, properly informed me that these finishes are now referred to as decorative coatings and no longer faux finishes. I definitely like this term better but I am fine with either one. I have now gotten excited about these finishes and the opportunity that they bring. What I am most excited about is how I can now create amazing wall finishes that bring joy to my customers but also allow me to be creative and artistic.

What I also realized is that there are few decorative artists out there creating a demand and of course highly profitable margins to go along with that demand. Have I turned in my man card now since I have laid down my spray gun and traded it for a sea sponge roller?  Some may think so but I am perfectly content with doing so. What I quickly realized is that applying Boero decorative coatings are far less labor intensive and demanding on my body. What this translates to is a longer career in painting and decorating and less pain in my knees, back, and neck. I can now roll up to the jobsite in a polo shirt, carrying in my suit case of tools, and go to work creating amazing finishes.

I no longer need to roll up in three vans full of sprayers and everything that goes with that to complete a paint job. Don’t get me wrong, I still love painting and will still take on painting jobs but it is nice to know I have a skill, craft, and trade that is added to my companies services making me a more well rounded painter. Check out my video on how simple it is to apply Boero metallic grit HERE. One very important part that so many fail to see is that this is a service that can be offered in the winter when so many painters find it challenging to source or get work. Glitz, glamour, metallics, and grains can be fun to apply.

Just sitting in my Academy and making sample boards using metallic grit, metallic suede, venetian plaster, and combinations of all of them is relaxing and enjoyable. You can simply let your mind wander or look at a picture in a magazine of some substrate and try to replicate it with Boero SRT, WRGP, venetian plaster, glazes, paints and more.

If you have not taken a class on applying decorative coatings I encourage you to do so. No one is going to ask you to wear a kilt and no one is going to ask for your man card at the entrance. Decorative coatings will put a smile on your face and of course you can make lots of money applying them. I’m going to bring sexy back to painting and bring back decorator to the title of painter.
